Pyrilinks-D

By Muryal · Comments (0)

Have you wondered what a Pyrilinks-D test is?  Joan was concerned because osteoporosis ran in her family.   In her search for a test that is accurate, and not the Dexa, I encouraged her to ask her doctor about Pyrilinks-D.    This harmless urine test does not involve any inconvenience, or danger.

Pyrilinks-D, or D-Pyrilinks is short for  Deoxypyridinoline, a component of type I collagen which is always present in  your bones.  When this element is found, unmetabolized in the urine it indicates that you are losing calcium at a faster rate than you are absorbing it to build new bone tissue.

Some benefits of this new test in preference to the Dexa bone scan are :

  1. It does not use any harmful radiation…

2.   You have quick results – don’t have to wait several  months
or  years for the next test results…

3.   The Pyrilinks-D test is the most accurate predictor of bone
fracture…

Rather it develops slowly over time.  Someone commented that Gwyneth Paltrow, Joan Rivers and Sally Fields having bone issues proves that it can happen to anyone –even to the health conscious like movie stars.

Does having a thin figure assure that you are healthy or health conscious?

Boron for Osteoporosis

By Muryal · Comments (0)

I had decided to write a post on my blog today about boron and how to it helps you to have healthy bones. But before I got the article written, I saw a note in the news to warn about taking it in supplement form if you also take Hormone Replacement Therapy.  So that gave me a double reason for writing this.

Boron is a little known mineral that is needed in small quantities in your body to help you absorb calcium, magnesium. and phosphorus for stronger bones.

So…

  • How much do you need?
  • Should you take boron supplements?
  • How can you get can  it in your diet?

Stella was very worried when told she had osteopenia. Her doctor explained that it just  meant that her bones were weaker than “normal”.  She wondered, “Will osteopenia become osteoporosis?” The purpose of this post is to relieve your mind if that is your worry.  Osteopenia does not have to become osteoporosis.

  • But what is “normal” bone density?
  • Why are bisphosphonate drugs prescribed for osteopenia?
  • How can you prevent osteopenia from becoming osteoporosis?

Every body is different, so what is normal for you may not be normal for me.

Just a couple decades ago there was no such “disease” as osteopenia. The word had not yet been coined.  Of course, that was before the drugs for osteoporosis had been developed.  Guess who invented that diagnosis?  Normal is thought of as what your bone density was at age thirty.  But if you don’t have a record of that,  the next best number is an educated guess.
