Bone Drugs Helpful or Harmful?

helpful or harmful?  On December 12th
we received the following news through
Reuters news agency:

“NEW YORK (Reuters) – A Manhattan
federal judge has rejected Merck & Co’s
effort to dismiss 24 cases alleging that
its Fosamax drug treatment for osteoporosis
causes jaw damage.

Drug can cause jaw damage after less than three years of
continuous use.

“In an opinion released Wednesday, U.S. District Judge John
Keenan ruled that the plaintiffs could introduce testimony by
two doctors to show that the drug can cause jaw damage after
less than three years of continuous use.

bone-density-test1In an article by Dr. Nan Fuchs in her Women’s Health Letter, November 2009, she warns that the most often used, DEXA Bone Density Test is not reliable for determining if a person has Osteopenia or Osteoporosis.

Many of us think of bones as just dry posts to give our body a frame to hang our flesh on.  However bones are living tissue that is constantly “remodeling”.  That is the continual process by which old bone tissue breaks down and is replaced with new cells.

It seems that the only places to learn the truth about osteoporosis and osteopenia these days are on the internet
and in health newsletters from integrative doctors who combine traditional medicine with new alternative discoveries.

I have heard reports from several friends that their doctors insisted that dangerous bone density drugs were their only hope of getting stronger bones and escaping the horrible consequences of osteopenia or osteoporosis.  It’s hard to imagine all the misinformation that’s out there about these drugs. ..

Is Bone Density Testing A Reliable Test?

is it and is it a necessary procedure? Not even to
question if it is a necessary expense?

All women between 50 and 65 years of age are
encouraged to get the bone test done. But is it of
any value?

First of all, bone density testing uses a scan to measure the density of the
minerals in your bone ( any bone may be used). The result is compared to
the density of some randomly selected individuals.
