Are Your Meds Causing Your Osteopenia?
ByYou may be surprised to discover which one of your medications is a cause of osteopenia.
It is really ironic that we often take a medication for one illness and then realize too late that the medication has caused another illness that is more difficult to treat.
When you get any medication, even if it is only an over-the-counter medication, it’s a smart idea to read the possible side-effects. Many cause upset stomach even though it is often written in such small print that it is difficult to see.
The medications I am writing about are those taken to relieve upset stomach. Any medication that is an antacid prevents your body from using any calcium or other minerals that your bones need to be healthy.
Protein and Calcium cannot be digested without out hydrochloric acid in the stomach.
It is scary to see many people barely finish eating a meal before popping a pill “to help their digestion”. In fact some meds are even recommended to be taken before the meal is eaten. In reality any meal that contains protein cannot be digested without out hydrochloric acid in the stomach.
Our bodies produce less hydrochloric acid when we top the age of 50, so most of us who are above that age bracket are very low in hydrychloric acid. Because of that our food does not digest properly so it just lies in the stomach and rots, causing lactic acid.
Then, if you take an antacid it just helps to push the food along in your digestive tract and causes more discomfort as it moves along.
If this is repeated often the result is very weak and brittle bones because they are deficient in calcium and the other minerals needed by healthy bones.
And if you are taking Tums to get your calcium you are getting a double whammy. Not only are you not getting real help for your indigestion , but you are also stopping your calcium from getting to your bones which may be causing your osteopenia.
If you really want help for indigestion problems, the wise thing to do is to drink a cup of peppermint tea, or just hot water with cinnamon or ginger or lemon. Other favorite natural remedies are chicken soup, a bowl of oatmeal or a serving of plain yogurt with a bit of fruit and a sugar substitute like truvia or erythritol to sweeten. These remedies will improve your health instead of doing damage.
