Does Sugar Contribute to Osteopenia and Osteoporosis?

By Muryal

When reading,”Does Sugar Contribute to Osteopenia and Osteoporosis?”
You may think, “That is really a strange question. How could it possibly
do that?

sugar-osteopenia2Sadly, the list of problems connected with the huge
amount of sugar consumed by the average American
is increasing annually.  If the average consumption
per year in this country is now 150 pounds per person,
just imagine how much above that average a  person
must eat to balance the ones who avoid it altogether,
as I try to do most of the time.

There are so many forms of sugar in our foods that we eat it when we
are entirely unaware of it.   Some common ways to consume it are in
prepared frozen and packaged foods, fast foods, fruit drinks, and restaurant meals.  The most prevalent and dangerous form is high fructose corn syrup.

But these huge amounts of sugar just cause diabetes, not osteoporosis. Right?  Wrong!

New research shows that in addition to the most well-known diseases
like diabetes, cancers, obesity and heart disease, sugar, even in small amounts, suppresses the immune system, making
it easier to contract the flu and many other ailments.

One list of problems associated with too much sugar that I read recently
listed:

  • depression

  • mood swings

  • irritability

  • hyperactivity

  • anxiety

  • panic attacks

  • mineral deficiencies

  • hypoglycemia

  • candida overgrowth

  • increased cholesterol levels

  • chronic fatigue

Of course, the disorder on the above list that caught my eye immediately was “mineral deficiencies”. The confirmed cause of osteoporosis and osteopenia is lack of calcium and magnesium in the bones.   These are  minerals.

Does this give you a clue as to why I titled this article, “Does Sugar Contribute to Osteopenia”?

The connection comes because our digestive tract must be acidic for minerals to be digested properly, and sugar makes the digestive system
alkaline. Therefore, even though we may get enough calcium and
magnesium in our food or supplements, it will not get into the bones,
as we hope. And after a period of time in which the bones are starved for minerals, the result will be osteopenia and eventually osteoporosis.

So, why starve your bones and subject yourself to painful hip or other fractures? Satisfy the urge for sweetness with delicious fruits. These foods have enough sugar for the energy we need and have fiber and contain other nutrients to build health instead of illness.

Thankfully, if you already have osteopenia or osteoporosis, it is not
irreversible.   Your healing plan is available in, 7 Secrets to Reverse
Your Osteopenia or Osteoporosis.

  5. obesity prevention is an incredibly worrying subject to me a I was overweight as a child and found it so hard to deal with the taunting and lack of confidence it left me with. So I was intrigued by your post Does Sugar Contribute to Osteopenia and Osteoporosis? and actually suggested to my daughter that she read it too. I wouldn’t necessarily agree with everything you say but there are some very valid points.
