Osteoporosis Prevention

because osteoporosis is a condition that may be develop slowly and
be truly painless. We may not have any inkling of the fact that we
are even a candidate for the disease.
Then suddenly a bone breaks and it is discovered that the cause
was porous, fragile bones. These broken bones, or fractures, occur
most often in the hip, spine, and wrist, though any bone can be
affected…
At this point, it is too late to prevent osteoporosis and the
emphasis has to be on reversing instead. However the same process
that we use for healing may be adopted for prevention.
Hip fractures almost always require hospitalization and major surgery.
Many times the hip is replaced and often it results in permanent
disability or even death. Fractures of the spine or vertebrae also have
serious consequences, including loss of height, severe back pain, and
deformity.
There are over thirty-five million people in the United States that have
osteoporosis. Though it is four times more prevalent in women than in
men, many men also suffer from it.
I have been especially concerned because of my own experience of having
broken my hip twice. My goal is to help as many as possible prevent this
needless suffering.
The good news is that it is not difficult to develop strong, healthy bones.
- The most important thing to remember is that we need to eat the
right foods and often supplement our diet to get the vitamins and
minerals we need. - It is also necessary to avoid smoking and excessive
use of alcohol. - Another part of the formula is correct exercise with some form
of strength training as bones need pressure to develop strength
just as much as muscles do – many are not aware of this.
Don’t become a statistic. Take steps now to prevent osteopenia and
